LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRIAN C. GAHAN

Lt. Col. Brian C. Gahan is the commander of Detachment 1, 182nd Medical Group, Peoria Air National Guard Base, Illinois. He plans, leads and directs medical training and response capabilities to reinforce local, state and federal agencies as directed during domestic disaster missions.

Lt. Col. Gahan began his military career in September 2006, receiving a direct commission in the Illinois Air National Guard. He was assigned to the 126th Medical Group, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as the bioenvironmental engineering officer in charge where he ensured the occupational and environmental health and safety of all wing members through applied engineering, and scientific knowledge and principles. In addition, he advised command and staff agencies on operational risk management. During this time, Lt. Col. Gahan participated in six state exercise evaluations for the Illinois CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP) as a bioenvironmental engineering officer until 2010, and with command and control as a medical liaison officer until 2014. He was selected in October 2014 as an investigating officer for the Complaints Resolution Division, Office of the Inspector General, Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, Ill. Since then, he has been assigned to perform complaints resolution analyses, inquiries and investigations; continual evaluation of programs; and unit effectiveness inspections in support of 17 active duty and 44 command-gained wings. Lt. Col. Gahan transferred to the 182nd Airlift Wing in 2016 to command the Detachment 1, 182nd Medical Group. In this role, he ensures unit capabilities include emergency medical triage, treatment and stabilization procedures for patients in contaminated environments as part of the Illinois National Guard 5th CERFP, and in support of the 182nd Airlift Wing’s domestic, federal and state missions.

In his civilian career, Lt. Col. Gahan is a registered professional engineer focused in petroleum and energy technology and development. He has been an industry leader in operational, financial, academic and research organizations, as well as professional associations. Prior to his current position, the lieutenant colonel served as the bioenvironmental engineering officer in charge with the 126th Medical Group, Scott AFB, Ill.
