Richard Ward II and Ann J. Ward pose for a photo in front of an F-84D Thunderstreak in the 182nd Airlift Wing air park in Peoria, Ill., Aug. 27, 2020. The Wards are children of Capt. Richard Ward, an F-84 pilot who died in an on-base aircraft accident during the June 1959 drill weekend. The captain’s Distinguished Flying Cross earned during the Korean War was bestowed to them by extended family during a ceremony on the installation after being lost for 61 years.
